Laughter Yoga was initially developed by a Mumbai Indian physician, Dr. Kataria, after reading about an American journalist, Norman Cousins, who back in 1964 utilized laughter to help cure his heart condition by watching old Marx Bros. movies.This prompted Dr. Kataria to interest himself in the healing powers of laughter and in conjunction with his wife, a Hatha Yoga teacher, led to the formulation of Laughter Yoga.

Laughter Yoga has fast become a world-wide phenomenon with its emphasis on laughter and yoga breathing exercises. Currently, there are hundreds of yoga studios offering Laughter Yoga today in North America. 

What is Laughter Yoga?

Simply put…..Laughter Yoga is about a series of laughter activities accompanied by gentle yoga breathing exercises (Pranayama). Dr. Kataria found that as laughter is contagious, getting a group to practice laughing together proved very effective. Having trouble laughing? Just fake it. He also discovered that faking laughter in a Laughter Yoga class is just as beneficial as real laughter, since the brain cannot distinguish the difference.                                                                                                                                                                          What started out as a simple concept that people laughing uninhibitedly together promotes a “feel good” emotional and physical reaction, has now evolved into classes led by qualified instructors in the practice of Laughter Yoga.
