It is recommend the first time you visit India to go with a group or someone who knows India. India can be an assault to the senses with the intense smells, colors, sites and sounds; yet there is a beauty in the people and their ancient way of life.


We will visit the magnificent sacred Hindu Temples that are over a thousand years old and can only be found in South India. Experience ayurvedic massages, dine on delicious Indian cuisine, learn about village-made handicrafts, Indian art, philosophy and music. Visit with enlightened masters and meditate in caves on the holi mountain Arunachala. All this and so much more.

Our intention is to help people experience the real India and stay safe and healthy at the same time. We travel in comfort in air conditioned buses and stay in nice hotels. We don’t consider ourselves as ‘tour guides’ but rather your hosts who show you the real India from a personal perspective that only a local can show. The tour is also spiritually based with yoga and meditation. However if a spouse wants to join and yoga is not their thing, that is perfectly fine. We will have plenty of scheduled free time for shopping and massages as well. We schedule in both activities and free time daily so that we can see and do many things but also have some down time as to explore on your own.

Yoga is a very important part of our daily routine. Though not mandatory, the yoga does help to keep our bodies and hearts open. Corrine teaches Svaroopa style yoga which is a very gentle core opening yoga that is appropriate for all levels. It helps to ground us in an intense and sometimes frenetic atmosphere of daily life in India. We visit less destinations and spend more time in each place. We get to know the locals and even shop for fresh fruit each day and visit the local markets. We have our favorite Coconut Lady and favorite Chai Shop for our afternoon tea. Less time on the bus and more time to sink into that palpable rhythm of India.

Many evenings will be spent with Corrine leading us in music and chanting. Each evening will be spent connecting by sharing about our days experiences. Beginning with yoga each day and ending with a group gathering helps to create a strong synergy within the group. It will also help us to to check in with each other to make sure physical and emotional health are intact. India is intense and can bring up things in people. The group energy will help us all process in a gentle way.

None of the activities are mandatory by any means. Personal schedules are honored.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival into Chennai. We will stay in Chennai the first night. Since many people arrive in the middle of the night, we will start slow the first day. After morning chai and breakfast we will visit a few interesting sights in and around the city of Chennai. St. Thomas Basilica Church was built on the mount where St Thomas, one of the twelve Apostles, was martyred in 72 AD. Christianity began in India in 52AD when St Thomas first arrived in India. This is a fascinating place because you can drink from the same spring that God magically created for St. Thomas when he was on the run from the King. The energy is incredible and it is one our favorite stops. We will shop in some Kadhi Village Made shops for colorful authentic hand made clothing. In the late afternoon we drive the one hour trip to our next destination of Mammalapuram.

Day 2-3
Mammalapuram or Mahabalapuram also known as Mammala is a quiet, Artisan beach town on the Indian ocean. We will do yoga outside daily, dine on fresh Indian seafood, stroll the quiet streets, visit local temples and play music in the evenings. A slow and easy integration to Mother India is our goal for these first few
days.

Day 4
Three hour drive to Tiruvannamalai on an air conditioned bus. Tiruvannamalai, an ancient temple town, is at the foot of the oldest mountain on earth, Arunachala. In Tiru we will be staying at Satya’s brand new Guesthouse which has a view of the sacred mountain, a lovely restaurant and fantastic yoga studio on the rooftop. Visit Patcha Ama Temple in the afternoon. Dinner at our guest house. Evening Chant. Fall into bed with dreams of Shiva and chanting.

Day 5-8
Four full days will fly by here in Tiruvannamalai which is one of the holiest cities in the world. Saints, Gurus, Teachers, Writers, Musicians and Spiritual Seekers come from all over the world to visit Arunachala, the home of one of our greatest Sages Ramana Maharishi. Days will include early morning walks around the mountain’s inner path which is 7kms, short walks up the mountain to Skanda Ashram cave to meditate, visiting the many temples in the area, visiting gurus and enlightened beings and asking them questions about life, visiting the famous Ramana Ashram, afternoons at chai shops, shopping, music and chanting in the evenings. One of the highlights is when we take a bull cart ride around the mountain. Satya brings money to hand out to the sadhus (holy men) and cookies for the monkeys, dogs and children. It is a magical journey where we will stop at many temples for blessings along the way and view the mountain as the sun goes down.

Day 9
Drive 2 hours to Pondicherry and check into our hotel. Afternoon exploration of Pondi. Pondi was built up by the British and is influenced by both French and British culture. Although still very much Indian, there are wonderful French restaurants and very good quality shops in the area. Dinner will be at one of the local outside french restaurants with high quality food…you can even eat the salads here!

Day 10 and 11
Yoga and breakfast. A day in Auroville. Visit the community meditation centre and meditate in the Mandir/Dome that took thirty five years to construct. Pondicherry is on the Indian ocean and so strolling the streets to explore will be lovely here. The famous Sri Aurobindo Ashram is in town as well as many other interesting sites.

Day 12
Drive the short two hour drive to our departure city of Chennai. We will stay in the same quaint hotel as we did our first night. It will seem like months ago that we arrived here. Staying in Chennai will make it easy for our departures and also leave us time for last minute photos, temple visits and shopping. Farewell dinner in Chennai.

Day 13
Packing for departure and last minute shopping. Most people will fly out after 6pm this evening.

We limit each tour to 12 people so please pay your deposit as soon as you possible. Checks and money orders accepted. Credit card payment through with Corrine is available.

Our philosophy for the tour is less travel/bus time and more time in the sacred towns to settle in and get a feel for each place. Our accommodations are very nice and rooms will have air conditioning and hot water. Our shuttle bus is very nice with air conditioning and comfy seats. We will sleep and eat in comfort and safety so that you can most fully enjoy your two weeks in India. Save the three month back packing pilgrimage for your second trip!
