Founded in 1998, The Yoga Space is an airy, spacious, and well-equipped studio offering yoga classes to Vancouver and the surrounding area. Director Louie Ettling, and other highly skilled and trained Iyengar teachers populate the schedule with classes throughout the week and on weekends, starting at 6:30AM and ending at 9:30PM. The Yoga Space has offered classes for students of all levels with a variety of different needs. All practitioners are welcomed.

The Yoga Space is an airy, spacious, and well-equipped studio near the south side of the Cambie Street Bridge close to downtown Vancouver. Bus #84 runs every 15 minutes along 4th/2nd and 6th Avenue, and stops right around the corner from the studio. We offer classes throughout the week and on weekends, starting at 6:45am and ending at 7:30pm.

The Yoga Space, registered under Louie Ettling's name, has been offering Iyengar yoga classes to Vancouver and the surrounding area since 1998. The instructors at this Vancouver Courier Stars of Vancouver award winning studio include Bridget Donald, Louie Ettling, Patricia Fernandes, Deborah Peake, Grant Richards, Corrie Vorlaufer, Elizabeth Adilman and Corinne Skrobot.

The Yoga Space has been the venue for national and international workshops, most often sponsored and organized by the Iyengar Yoga Association of B.C. On such occasions students and teachers have the opportunity to study with senior teachers from other regions/countries.

The Yoga Space teachers have all had a long and thorough training and are current members of B.K.S Iyengar Yoga Association of B.C. as well as the Canadian Iyengar Yoga Teachers Association. www.iyengaryogacanada.ca

The Yoga Space has offered classes for students of all levels with a variety of different needs; from beginners to advanced practitioners are welcomed. Classes have been offered to healthy beginner, seniors, children, teens, corporate groups, pregnant and post-natal women, special needs groups/individuals, people with back problems/MS, and for those who require gentle/restorative work. On occasion a series of early morning classes (this practice is called a Sadhana) is offered from 6:45am – 8am.

The majority of classes are for healthy students between 8 and 108. Class sizes vary. A beginners' class or special classes may be as small as having six people. Other ongoing active classes may accommodate thirty people comfortably

Bridget Donald
Bridget Donald
Bridget is a certified Iyengar Yoga instructor who has been studying yoga since 1992 and teaching at the Yoga Space since 2001. She has studied with local teachers Franklin Schryver and Claudia MacDonald as well as many national and international teachers. Grateful for the benefits that yoga has brought her, Bridget enjoys seeing her students discover the joys of yoga for themselves.
Corinne Skrobot
Corinne Skrobot
Corinne has been a student of Iyengar yoga since 2000, studying under Louie Ettling at The Yoga Space. She regularly attends intensive workshops and classes with senior level instructors as she works towards her teaching certification. Corinne has been a registered Physiotherapist for 17 years and is inspired by her passion for yoga to guide her clients towards their own self-care.

Corrie Vorlaufer
Corrie is an accomplished yoga teacher who has been practicing yoga for over 30 years. She decided to share the years of knowledge she had gained, and started teaching Yoga more than 10 years ago. Corrie is an encouraging and motivating teacher who has expertise in working with pupils of every level to gain optimum achievement in every pose. She is a certified Iyengar Yoga instructor.
Deborah Peake
Deborah Peake
Deborah has been practicing Iyengar yoga since 1996 and began teaching in 1999. Deborah has attended numerous workshops and intensives with both national and international senior teachers in Australia and New Zealand and was fortunate enough to attend the R.I.M.Y.I. in Pune, India. Deborah believes the wondrous joy of yoga is available to one and all, to be cherished and shared.
Grant Richards
Grant Richards
Grant Richards began his study of Iyengar Yoga with Claudia MacDonald in 1990. He has attended many workshops locally by visiting senior Iyengar teachers. Grant has been a student at the Yoga Space since 2000 and is in the second year of the three year training program with Ingelise Nherlan and Louie Ettling. Grant enjoys the process of working towards a better balance in life through yoga, and encourages more men to join the practice of Iyengar Yoga.

Louie Ettling
Louie Ettling is the Director of The Yoga Space. She has been a keen student of Iyengar Yoga since she started her studies with Wende Davis in the eighties. She has studied with B.K.S Iyengar and his family in Pune, India and in North America on six occasions and with senior Iyengar Yoga teachers from all over the world. For the past twelve years Louie has shared her love of the subject by teaching seriously and with humour. She is supportive and challenging of students' own intelligent exploration of and participation in yoga.
Patricia Fernandes
Patricia Fernandes
Patricia began her studies of Iyengar yoga in the mid 1980's in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Since then she has lived and studied with teachers across Canada and recently moved to Vancouver from Ottawa where she taught for 10 years. Her studies include workshops with senior Canadian and international teachers as well as the Iyengar family, including classes at the RIMYI in Pune, India. She teaches from a depth of training and experience, encouraging students to explore the many gifts yoga has to offer and to observe the changes that it brings.

  Level 1 for Men

A level suitable to beginners and obligatory for students new to Iyengar yoga. Here, the foundation work is done in order to maximize healthy yoga development. Under the teacher's guidance, each student studies at their own pace. The foundational yoga poses are systematically and safely introduced so that students can improve in mobility, strength and flexibility. Some students choose to continue to develop their yoga practice at this level rather than move to higher levels.

Monday 6:30 am - 8:00 am Independent Practice
  During the independent practice, students who are registered in classes at The Yoga Space may use the studio in order to do their own practice. While there is a teacher present, no instruction is given. If students are interested in attending during this time period, they need to inform the studio 24 hours in advance.
  8:00 am - 10:00 am Level 1,2,3 (Louie Ettling)
  Here the teacher will work with all the stated level students together to develop a deeper understanding of Iyengar yoga practice. Students are assisted in working safely and appropriately at their current level. Beginners are welcome in any class which has "Level 1" in its description, even if it also says Level 2 or 3. The number of new beginners might be limited in mixed level classes.
  5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Level 2 (BD)
  For those who have taken at least one full session of Level 1 Iyengar yoga classes. Once the student and teacher agree that foundation work is strong enough and that there is a good balance between mobility, strength and flexibility in the yoga asana (postures) a student can move on to a class of this level.
  7:30 pm - 9:00 pm Level 1 (BD/CS)
  A level suitable to beginners and obligatory for students new to Iyengar yoga. Here, the foundation work is done in order to maximize healthy yoga development. Under the teacher's guidance, each student studies at their own pace. The foundational yoga poses are systematically and safely introduced so that students can improve in mobility, strength and flexibility. Some students choose to continue to develop their yoga practice at this level rather than move to higher levels.
 
Tuesday 10:00 am - 11:30 am Gentle (Patricia Fernandes)
  Traditional poses are adapted using props to encourage passive extensions relevant for recuperation and/or bodies needing to move carefully. This class is suitable for students wanting a less active practice. Students in regular classes who become pregnant could transfer to a class of this level.
  3:45 pm - 5:15 pm Level 1,2 (Louie Ettling)
  Here the teacher will work with all the stated level students together to develop a deeper understanding of Iyengar yoga practice. Students are assisted in working safely and appropriately at their current level. Beginners are welcome in any class which has "Level 1" in its description, even if it also says Level 2 or 3. The number of new beginners might be limited in mixed level classes.
  6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Level 1,2 (Louie Ettling)

  12:15 pm - 1:00 pm Level 1,2,3 Pranayama (Louie Ettling)
  The study of yogic breath. The pranayama class is open to students who participate in the class immediately after and to students enrolled in any regular class who want to develop pranayama practice.
