The mission of Karuna Center for Yoga & Healing Arts is to create community and promote healing through yoga and the healing arts. We are available to people of all ages, abilities, ethnicities, and genders.

Our Space

Many people have commented on the special quality of our studio space. A 1900 square foot room with maple floors and a 30-foot domed ceiling, it was originally designed by the Freemasons employing sacred geometry. The atmosphere of the room has been enhanced by its many years of use as a space for yoga, healing and meditation. The nature of our space supports the work we do.

What is Yoga?

Yoga means union of body, mind and spirit. Many people in the West know of yoga as a collection of physical postures to be performed. In fact, yoga is one of the six major classical Indian philosophies, and it is a method for reducing suffering in all aspects of one’s life.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has many benefits. It promotes strength, flexibility, healthy breathing, relaxation, a sense of inner peace, increased mental focus, and healing from physical injuries and emotional pains. Whatever one’s primary reason for studying yoga may be, the longer one continues to practice yoga, the more its positive effects deepen, strengthen and multiply, bringing one into closer harmony with one’s true nature.

Toxic Scent Free Environment

Many people at Karuna have a sensitivity to perfumes and scented products and some are allergic to the chemicals in these products, which can set off a severe reaction. As Director, I would like to make the space welcoming to everyone. I invite you to refrain from using these unnaturally scented products while practicing at Karuna.


Karuna Center for Yoga and Healing Arts is licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Our Teacher Training Program is in compliance with the standards of the nationally recognized Yoga Alliance and approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Our 5 Element Shiatsu Program is an AOBTA (American Organization for Bodywork Therapies of Asia) and Department of Education approved Program.

Chant / Invocation to Patanjali

Yogena cittasya padena vacam, malam sarirasya ca vaidyakena, yopakarottam pravaram muninam, patanjalim pranjalir anato’smi, abahu purusakaram, sankha cakrasi dharinam, sahasra sirasam svetam, pranamami patanjalim

Translation to English: I humbly bow to Patanjali, the greatest of sages, who removed the imperfection of the mind by yoga and that of speech by grammar and that of the body by medicine. I bow to Patanjali whose upper body is of human form, who holds a conch, disc, and sword, who is thousand headed and white.


We have props available for use and purchase, please bring a sticky mat if you have one.

Sunday 10:00 am - 11:30 am Yoga Levels 1 & 2
  All levels welcome. Beginning level class. Foundational postures are main focus. Many standing postures included in sequences.
  5:15 pm - 6:45 pm Yoga Level 1
  All levels welcome. Beginning level class. Foundational postures are main focus. Many standing postures included in sequences.
Monday 9:00 am - 10:30 am Yoga Level 1 & 2
  4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Wise Yoga : 50 and Up
  A restorative class taught specifically for women and men that are 50 years old and older. The specific asanas are chosen for hormonal, spiritual, and physical benefits to the body at this phase of life
  5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Fine Tuning Foundations of Yoga
  Gentle Yoga class with Hands-on Assists and Adjusting
Tuesday 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Yoga Levels 1, 2, & 3
  Taught by the Director of Karuna, this is a class suitable for students of level 1 and 2. This class is often vigorous and challenging. The emphasis is on standing poses and foundational asana. Students learn inversions such as head-stand, handstand, and shoulderstand. Students also practice Urdhva Dhanurasana and other backbends, twists, forward bends, and balancing postures.
Wednesday 9:00 am - 10:30 am Yoga Levels 1 & 2
  5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Level 1 and Specific Needs
  This class is geared towards each individual student, finding modificaitons and postures for their individual therapeutic needs.
  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Vinyasa/ Flow
  All Levels welcome. Faster paced, linking breath and posture.
Thursday 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Yoga Level 3 & 4
  This Class is for advanced students. Must be able to hold head stand and shoulderstand for up to 5 minutes. Have a strong practice of inversions such as Handstand, and have a strong understanding of the actions in the foundational asana.
  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Vinyasa/ Flow
Friday 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm Gentle Restorative and Immune Boosting
  All Levels Welcome, combat fatigue, stress, and sickness with these asana.
  9:00 pm - 10:30 pm Pranayama / Gentle Yoga
  Restorative Yoga and the Art and Science of Breathing. All levels welcome.
Saturday 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Yoga Levels 1 & 2
  Focus on Foundational Asana. Vigorous and challenging. All Level 1 and 2 postures practiced. Students learn headstand and handstand. Students will also practice other inversions, standing postures, forward bends, twists, backbends, and restorative postures.
