Anita Anderson
Anita completed her 200 hour yoga training at Yoga North in 2012 and enjoys making yoga accessible to others through teaching. Anita has found following the path of yoga to be life enhancing. The practice of somatics and the classic postures leads to more freedom and awareness in the body along with a connection to the purest part of the self. The study of the Yamas and Niyamas (yoga’s ethical system) brings more ease to work, life and relationships and provides for more peaceful living. Yoga also allows for even more enjoyment of favorite activities, such as spending time in nature.

RYT 500, PYT, owner of Yoga North studio since December 2001, holds a masters degree as well as certification in Hatha Yoga and Yoga for Cancer Survivors as well as extensive Yoga Therapy training with Susi Hately. An experienced wilderness adventure guide, Ann brings the spirit of adventure and curiosity to her expertise as a yoga instructor and business owner, grounding her ability in the practicality and expertise of the body. Ann is a model of yogic living for her students and brings a sense of wisdom and fun to the daily practice of yoga.

MA, completed the Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in the Himalayan Tradition at Yoga North studio in 2005. She has found all of the classes she has taken, as well as those she teaches, at Yoga North to be life changing, spirit freeing, and heart opening. Catharine is a Licensed Psychologist who sees clients in her home office on Lake Superior.

ERYT 500, owner of Yoga North studio since 1999, holds two Masters degrees, certifications in Kundalini and Hatha yoga, and extensive studies in Meditation and Yogic Philosophy. Initiated into the Himalayan Tradition, Deborah has made numerous trips to India for continued studies. She is author of The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice, an upcoming book on the Western mind, 2 instructional CDs, and numerous published articles. Deborah uses her knowledge and training to support others in living a life integrated with balance, clarity, and well-being. She lives in constant gratitude and appreciation for the richness of the yogic teachings, her teachers, and the experiences of her life.

MA, RYT 500, teaches Hatha yoga. She feels blessed for the acceptance and support she has received at Yoga North, and tries to bring those qualities into her teaching practice as well as her job as our Marketing Coordinator. Erika's former professional life was in Nonprofit Advocacy, and when Erika “came to the mat” yoga captivated her and she could think of nothing better than increasing the amount of yoga happening in the world. She encourages students to foster self-awareness, relaxation and breath because-- the way we show up to our yoga practice is often the way we show up to our lives-- skills in the physical, mental, and emotional body can be developed at the mat. She is currently deepening her training at Yoga North in the 500hr Teacher Training program.

Hilary Buckwalter MA, RYT500 Hilary's love affair with yoga began in 2006. She received her first certification to teach in 2008, completed the 500 hr training at Yoga North in 2009 and in 2010 she traveled to India to study at The Santosh Puri Ashram. She has a Masters in Advocacy and Political Leadership from UMD and is currently in her second year in The Shalom Program for Spiritual Direction at the Benedictine Monastery. As a new mom and someone with scoliosis (curvature of the spine), Hilary is very passionate about uncovering the innate healing potential of the body and in supporting students in their own discoveries. She feels very grateful to be at Yoga North, absorbing the beauty of Somatics while being immersed and held in the Himalayan Tradition.

is mama to two small boys and Yogaplay instructor. She feels blessed to be able to find constant opportunity for practice in this busy life. It's ALL Yoga!! It's ALL Play!! And Yeah for those little gurus; who offer more lessons than we ever sign up for! RYT 500, Somatics Educator, Reiki Practitioner, Jodi's education in the healing arts began in 1998 at the Utah College of Massage Therapy, where she earned certification as a Massage Therapist. She continued her education in Reiki and Quantum-Touch and is a Certified Practitioner of both modalities. Most recently she continued her education in Hatha Yoga of the Himalayan Tradition with Yoga North where she completed their 200 and 500 hour teacher training. Yoga is a practice she finds to be profoundly healing physically and emotionally as it brings other healing modalities she's learned into one self-empowering practice that simplifies and encompass the healing potential we all carry within.

Jodi lives in Washburn, Wisconsin with her husband, four small children, and a dog and cat. She is a semi-retired college mathematics lecturer who received her Yoga Teaching certification in 2011 after completing the 200 hr Teacher Training course at Yoga North. Jodi is especially interested in vinyasa and ashtanga yoga, breath work, somatics, and meditation. When she is not herding kids or teaching yoga Jodi enjoys skiing of any kind, hiking, sailing, cooking, baking, camping, paddleboarding, along with coaching and playing soccer.

RYT 500, received his Hatha Yoga certification from Sun/Moon Studios in Mankato MN in 2002. Joe has studied in depth in the Himalayan tradition and the Iyengar method, which emphasizes the detail and precision of alignment. A committed yoga practitioner since 1989, Joe shares his expertise in asana alignment and his love of the 8-limb practice of yoga. Joe believes that the focus on detail and precision in asana makes the poses come alive, and continually brings one to deeper levels of awareness in mind, body, and spirit.

RYT 200. Since 2002 she has cultivated a fondness for the Ashtanga and Hatha traditions and the underlying philosophy that surrounds yoga. She received Hatha certification from Yoga North in the Spring of 2005 as well as in depth teacher training in Ashtanga from David Swenson in 2004. In the years since she has attended Ashtanga workshops led by: David Williams, Doug Swenson, David Swenson, Manju Jois, and Govinda Kai.

Margaret Harstad RYT200, RTT, CMT, PPYT has been working in the healing arts since 2003, receiving her 750 hour training for massage at Touchstone Healing Arts located in Burlington, Vermont. Since then she has become a Registered Thai Therapist with over 300 hours of training, has completed her Yoga Teacher Training 200 hours with Yoga North and has completed her Principle Based Partner Yoga Teacher training with Elysabeth Williamson of Boulder, Colorado. Margaret's passion lies in Thai Bodywork and Partner Yoga. She owns Muggymoose,a Thai Bodywork, Partner Yoga and Massage Studio in downtown Duluth. She also teaches Thai and Partner Restorative classes and workshops at Yoga North. Her heart grows larger when she sees the energy that people share and give to one another when working in tandem in a Thai Yoga or Partner Yoga practice. Both of these forms offer a beautiful sharing of energy and support without many words. Margaret believes if we could all glean a little energy from another and give a little energy to another every day, the world would most certainly be a better place.

Mary Bue RYT 200 received her certification at Whole Life Yoga in Seattle WA in Viniyoga. Viniyoga builds strength, encourages circulation and links breath to movement. Mary is quite fond of this form of yoga and came to it after dabbling in many different styles since 1998. The main aspect of Viniyoga that Mary finds benefit from is its use of the breath as the medium for movement. Around the same time that Mary was deepening her yoga practice as a teenager, she also began developing as a touring and performing singer-songwriter. Yoga has helped to bring balance, focus, and more creativity into what was a fast paced and over-stimulating lifestyle of travel and gigs. An avid runner, Mary finds that yoga keeps her relatively injury-free and helps with concentration. Mary returned to her beloved Duluth during the summer of 2011 and is thrilled to be a part of the vibrant Yoga North community. The treasure trove of classes and learning opportunities at this studio are bountiful and she is happy to share a style of yoga that hasn't yet made a big mark in the Midwest. Her hope is to help students find a deeper connection to their breath and invite them to feel more at ease in their body, which is perfectly one-of-a-kind.

Molly McManus RYT500, PYT and Somatic Educator, is co-owner of Yoga North. Molly has flirted with yoga and Eastern philosophy all her life and when she found her home in Duluth committed to the practice and teachings at Yoga North. She enjoys teaching postures and philosophy as well as Somatic Education at Yoga North. She gets great joy working with individuals in private yoga sessions helping bodies find greater ease, better function and increased vitality. Molly continues her development with continuous training in anatomy, therapeutic yoga, adaptive yoga and neuromuscular reeducation techniques as well as any great yogic philosophy courses she can find. The diversity in her interests, background, education and experience help her to create a relaxed, inviting and fun atmosphere to teach the wildly beneficial life skills of yoga. She is keenly aware that Joseph Campbell had it right when he said, "Follow your Bliss!"

BA, RN, IKYTA, experienced the transformative power of Kundalini Yoga at Yoga North in 1999. She completed Kundalini teacher training through the Center For Happiness in Minneapolis . Her outside interests include wilderness camping, travel, parenting sons, and gardening.

Patti Sweeney, RN-CBN, MBA, began her studies of yoga in the 1970s in California. She completed her 500 hour training at Yoga North to support her passion of understanding yoga at a deeper level. As a nurse who believes in treating the "whole person", yoga is a perfect fit. All yoga is good yoga, no matter what it looks like if it is done with the right intention. The blending of Eastern and Western traditions allows her to better support bodies to their optimal level of wellness. Finding "truth" in the body on the mat, and then living it off the mat is her desire for all who attend her classes. Patti says, "It is an honor and blessing to practice with such amazing students. It is a gift that humbles me with unspeakable gratitude.

RYT 200 has had a life long interest in health and wellness. She has been practicing Yoga since 1998 and completed the 200 hour teacher certification requirements through Yoga North’s Teacher Training program in 2008. Her main focus right now is to allow ease and contentment in her yoga practice and in her life and to encourage her students to do the same. As co-owner of On-Word Bound Books (a publishing company), Sara worked closely with Deborah Adele of Yoga North on her book, The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice.

RYT 200, is working toward her 500 hr certification through Yoga North. Her roots as a wilderness educator bring an exploratory approach to her classes while grounding her interest in supporting student discoveries to increase function and ease. She delights in exploring the world through the eyes of children and enjoys bringing their passion into her yoga classes. Sarah loves being present, learning and growing through the daily adventures that parenting brings at home or in the Boundary Waters.

Stephanie completed her 200 hour teacher training program at Yoga North in 2013, after five years of personal practice. She grew up in Duluth, and recently returned after some time in Minneapolis and Thailand. She has a new love for northern Minnesota after being introduced to the hiking trails, the boundary waters, and hidden nooks along the lake. What started as a pursuit of physical fitness grew to something much larger and more meaningful as she experienced yoga and studied the philosophy. The ability to bring stillness to the mind and the connection of the breath to the body have improved all aspects of her life and have inspired a greater passion for practicing and teaching yoga. “Because you are alive, everything is possible.” -Thich Nhat Han

Teri has been practicing yoga since 2000 and is currently working toward 500 hour certification through Yoga North. She moved to Duluth in 2008 and loves living here because there's so much to do - on the beach, the lake, the ski trails, hiking trails and mountain biking trails - it's truly an inspiring place to live. Teri believes it is important to follow one's passions, and is particularly passionate about adapting yoga for physical disabilities, therapeutic benefits of yoga for mental health diagnoses and applying yoga to be more efficient and free in recreational sports activities. She truly enjoys bringing yoga into all aspects of life - bringing the physical practice into outdoor/sports activities; and bringing the philosophical and spiritual practices into work-life, relationships and being the best person she can be in the community by (in the words of Swami Rama) "loving all and excluding none".

Sadhana is an early morning spiritual discipline of chanting and postures in the Kundalini Yoga Tradition.

  Incorporates therapeutic yoga and breath work to introduce students to classic Hatha yoga poses and a solid foundation of principles to build from. Using these postures to increase the body’s alignment, stability, strength and flexibility. This class focuses on the basics for new & returning students.

  5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Power Ashtanga Yoga
  A more rigorous class; stretches, strengthens, and tones using the full primary series of postures designed to build heat and encourage breathing.
  6:45 pm - 8:00 pm Hatha I
  Hatha I Yoga incorporates breath work and postures to increase the body’s alignment, strength and flexibility. In level I we stretch & strength at a gentler pace while building on the foundation and knowledge of Hatha poses.
  7:15 pm - 8:30 pm Training the Mind
  Learn about the four functions of the mind (sensory intake, ego, intuition, and memory), and how they interact with one another and inform our choices and responses to life.

We will learn tools to train the mind by working with the four functions and kleshas (causes of suffering) so that we can live a more skillful and joyful life!

Tuesday 9:30 am - 10:45 am Morning Hatha
  MORNING HATHA incorporates breath work and postures to increase the body’s alignment, strength and flexibility. Emphasis on the inner core, building awareness and finding ease in the body.
  11:00 am - 12:00 pm Soma Yoga for Chronic Pain
  Using the techniques of Somatics and Therapeutic Yoga we will work to improve your quality of life. We use breathing techniques to stimulate the para-sympathetic nervous system and move the body from a constant state of stress to a new found relaxed resilience. Muscles are released, relaxed and balanced through the use of somatic movements which focus the brain specifically on the contracted muscles and movement patterns.
  5:30 pm - 6:45 pm Soma Yoga for Strength and Core
  Learn how to access, strengthen, and release core muscles efficiently to relieve pain, have a dynamic posture, improve strength and athletic performance.

  Postures will flow from one to another in conjunction with breath. This is a step up from a Hatha class incorporating traditions from the Ashtanga Yoga tradition.

  Incorporate Therapeutic yoga, classic asana, and somatics. Somatics is a gentle practice which services in retraining the neuromuscular system. This helps free us from chronic pain, improves physical functioning and mobility.
  5:30 pm - 6:30 pm Hatha I/II
  Incorporates regular use of Sun Salutation with more stamina, breath work and postures to increase awareness, the body’s alignment, strength and flexibility.
  7:00 pm - 8:15 pm Cultivating Calm
  Come learn about the physiological and psychological effects of stress and some simple, key techniques towards breaking this cycle and cultivating a calmer you. Registration required. 11/5 - 12/17

  In the spirit of Thanksgiving, unroll your mat and celebrate abundance and an attitude of gratitude.
Join us for an all level 'light flow, mantra inspired practice' that will lift your spirits and leave you feeling centered and grateful .

  Learn how to relieve pain and tension while cultivating balance, strength and stability.This all levels class uses the techniques of classic asana, therapeutic yoga, and somatics to teach students how to experience the many therapeutic benefits of those classic poses we love!
  3:00 pm - 7:00 pm Community Acupuncture
  Experience healing in a group setting that's effective, affordable, and empowering. Staggering sessions allows you to absorb the treatment while others are receiving within the same space. Intake provided followed by acupuncture while lying on the floor on blankets with whatever support is necessary. You may relax with the needles in for 20-45 minutes.

  Hatha Yoga with an emphasis on finding core stability and a balanced body in postures.

  HATHA II emphasis on details & form; more complex postures; some inversions
  3:00 pm - 7:00 pm Community Mendhi
  Mendhi is the art of decorating the body in intricate designs with paste made from the henna plan. Designs are made by drawing on the skin with the henna paste and letting it dry on the skin. Mendhi is temporary and images typically last one to three weeks.

Call or email the office to sign up for a 15-30 minute time slot. Second Friday of each month on 9/5, 10/3, 11/7, 12/5.

  5:15 pm - 6:30 pm Yin Relax
  Yin Yoga uses traditional Hatha poses, mostly seated postures which allow a deep stretch, combined with Restorative style poses, which use multiple props to support the body, allowing a deeper opening. All poses will be held longer than in a regular Hatha class - around 5 minutes per pose. The dynamic of the class will be meditative, focusing on the breath and using the breath to find opening and ease in the body. Meets weekly Fridays 5:15-6:30
  7:00 pm - 8:30 pm New! Soma Yoga for Knitters
  When knitting becomes a pain in the neck…. Learn how to use gentle, therapeutic movements to keep your body healthy and happy, so you can spend more time knitting comfortably! In this class, we will target areas of the body important to knitters: freeing up muscles of the upper-back, shoulders, neck, jaw and even the arms and hands. Learn small, simple movements that can make a big difference to keep you knitting happier!

Enjoy grounding, breathing and learning yoga postures for both you and baby! A guided practice in a playful welcoming space with lots of flexibility for baby’s needs (nursing/feeding, diaper changing & fussing are to be expected).For moms or dads or grandparents to practice one-on-one with babies— up to 12 months of age.
