Kundalini Yoga is an ancient form of yoga that has just been recently practiced in the west. While it has been practiced for centuries in the east, it was just introduced in the west in 1969 when Sikh Yogi Bhajan founded the 3HO, or the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization. The organization aimed to introduce Kundalini to a broader population. Although it has never been taught in public prior to that time, Yogi Bhajan felt the need for everyone to be given the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of this type of Kundalini Yoga. The Meaning of Kundalini Kundalini is a term that refers to untapped energy at the base of your spine, which can be drawn up through your body to awaken each of the seven chakras. When this energy reaches your Crown Chakra, you are expected to reach full enlightenment. The Focus of Kundalini Yoga Kundalini Yoga places special focus on breath and movement, such that each asana (position) series is done with a specific breathing technique that enhances the effect of the poses, the purpose of which is to free the energy from the base of your spine and allow it to move upwards. The sequences in this form of yoga often consist of rapid, repetitive movements performed with a specific breath or holding a pose while breathing in a specific way. Sometimes the sequences may also include chanting. What to Expect from Kundalini Yoga A Kundalini Yoga class typically begins with a short chant and then a warm-up session to stretch your spine and improve your flexibility. The main work that you will be required to do in class is called kriva, which is a sequence of poses that focus on specific areas of the body. The class then ends with meditation, which may be accompanied by the playing of a gong as well as a closing song. Most Kundalini yogis emphasize the need for your body to be adequately prepared both physically and energetically to handle the immense Kundalini force, or you may suffer some irreparable damage. For this reason, the carefully developed system of prakriyas and kriyas, coupled with adequate training in the awareness and control of higher energies, are all targeted towards carefully conditioning the Kundalini Yoga student. Is Kundalini Yoga for You? This is said to be a form of yoga that is of a more spiritual aspect, as it goes past the body’s physical performance and emphasizes instead on aspects such as: - Breathing - Chanting - Meditation - Mudras Despite its highly spiritual nature, however, Kundalini Yoga can be very physically challenging. Therefore, this form of yoga is recommended only for practitioners who are capable of handling both challenges to the mind and body. The powerful nature of the Kundalini requires Kundalini Yoga to be learned and practiced only under the guidance of a qualified and experienced guru, especially if you’re still relatively new to yoga practices. Once you gain awareness of the Kundalini, you should then strive to bring this force under the control of your mind by employing higher disciplines in yoga, which include advanced breathing techniques, concentration, and meditation.
