When people hear the term “Tantric Yoga,” they almost always think of it only in as a sexual practice. However, that is a very shallow view of this form of yoga. The truth is that Tantra is a very deep and esoteric discipline, which focuses on channelling the creative energies towards permanent enlightenment. While it is true that sex is a large part of the practice, it is not the only consideration and this form of yoga is not something that can or should be taken casually. In fact, Tantric Yoga can help you build your mental health, flexibility, and your relationship with your partner as well. The Sanskrit word Tantra means “to weave together” and while the term is often used in relation to sex, it can also mean weaving both your body and mind with that of your lover as you sincerely concentrate on the postures. The aim is for you and your partner to move as one: one mind, one body, one spirit. Both of you will learn how to celebrate your bodies and awaken your sexuality without actually focusing on sex. At the same time, Tantric Yoga also encourages you to weave together all the methods and experiences on your path into your own life. Remember that the key to this form of yoga is the journey itself, rather than the destination or the goal. The Benefits of Tantric Yoga Just as its focus goes way beyond sex, the benefits you get from Tantric Yoga also reach far beyond sexual improvement and satisfaction. As you stretch into the postures, your body becomes more agile and flexible. And as you practise regularly with your partner, you are able to bond with him on a deeper level and build your relationship even more. Between feeling better about yourself in general and learning to really listen to each other’s body, the possibilities are truly endless. Other benefits of this form of yoga include centering or reaching a higher level of consciousness as well as the ability to become one with your partner in several different ways because of the intensity of your connection. In time, your connection may even become so strong that every other couple you know will envy it. Learning Tantric Yoga The good news for those who want to learn Tantric Yoga is that there are a lot of ways for you to do so. You can visit several websites for inspiration or learn techniques from DVDs. You may also watch online videos, review the series of poses and then try them with your partner. There are even books you can use for learning this form of yoga. Better yet, you may want to hire the services of a yogi to personally guide you through the postures until such time that you and your partner can successfully practise without assistance. Remember that this form of yoga may be one of the best ways for you and your partner to achieve union not just on the physical, but on all possible levels.
