Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, also known as Mysore Yoga, Mysore Ashtanga Yoga, or simply as Ashtanga Yoga, is a rigorous system of yoga-based physical exercises developed by K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore India, designed to build strength, flexibility, and stamina. Its practice consists of a set series of poses, which are always performed in the same order. Students move from one posture to the next in a continual flow linking movements to breath (called a vinyasa). Ashtanga Vinyasa is very physically demanding. There are six levels, or “series” of practices, each one more advanced in its physical components than the previous. After reaching a level of proficiency in one series, students graduate to the next level, which they then continue to practice to perfection. Much confusion and misunderstanding about the word “Ashtanga” has developed in the West as a result of the many practitioners who continue to use this term in various ways. As such, this system referred to as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga should not be confused with the Classical Ashtanga Yoga (or 8-limb path) of Maharishi Patanjali. Jeff Lichty adds the following input: One misunderstanding in modern yoga is to believe the Ashtanga Yoga of Pattabhi Jois to be synonymous with the 'led' vinyasa flow classes so popular in the west. The depth of Pattabhi Jois' Ashtanga Yoga is taught primarily in the Mysore Style class setting. In this class each student receives individual attention from their teacher when it is needed. Pattabhi Jois used to say Ashtanga Yoga is Patanjali Yoga. [The entrance is simply through the third limb of asana]. For more information on the origin's of Ashtanga Yoga please see www.kpjayi.org. He and his wife teach regular Mysore Style classes in Victoria, BC. They have spent many years studying directly with Guruji and his grandson Sharath in Mysore, India. Giuliano Vecchiè has added the following notes: Vinyasa system is connected with Ujjayi breathing and Mula and Uddiyana Bandha, to be mantained during the whole practice. Giuliano is an Ashtanga Yoga practitioner and teacher who started in 1998 after having met Guruji Sri K.Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. He has studied with many Master Teachers like Manju Jois, David Swenson, Lino Miele, Nancy Gilgoff, Richard Freeman and Mark & Joanne Darby. He has also studied with Kino MacGregor and he normally organizes many meetings with the above Masters in Bologna (Italy). He practices traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system as tought by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Manju Jois
