Bikram Yoga is a type of hot yoga which involves a series of 26 postures and two specific breathing exercises. This method is designed by the yoga master Bikram Choudhury and has been practiced for almost forty years. What Is Hot Yoga? First, what is hot yoga, and what makes it different from Bikram? Basically, hot yoga refers to a variety of yoga practices or poses done in a heated room. The rooms should ideally be 95 to 100 degrees, which promotes flexibility in the body by causing profuse sweating. Bikram Yoga is an innovation of Hot Yoga and follows its own method and series of poses. A Look at Bikram Yoga Like several forms of hot yoga, Bikram Yoga is practiced in a heated room. However, what makes it different is that each session involves only 26 yoga poses and two breathing (pranayama) exercises which are performed twice during a single 90 minute class. The sequence of the 26 poses is intended to stretch and warm up the muscles. Taught in the same manner over and over for each and every session, the sequence promotes the circulation of blood to all parts of the body, helping the body restore itself and promoting weight loss, good muscle tone and excellent health. These 26 poses are the same throughout the world, as well. During the first 45 minutes of the session, the sequence will involve standing poses which establishes balance of the muscles and the skeleton. This also improves the balance of the body, since most of the time one side (either the left or right) of the body is usually stronger than the other one. Bikram yoga also aims to lessen pain associated with misaligned muscles. The next 45 minutes involves floor postures that correct the alignment of the spine, helping fix problems and pain conditions involving the back and the spine as well. Bikram Yoga Considerations It’s important to consider several things before starting Bikram Yoga. Because it is done in a hot room, expect to sweat profusely, so you may want to wear the lightest clothing you have. It is recommended to practice yoga on an empty stomach, so make sure that the last time you have eaten is at least two hours before the session begins. You should keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water prior to and after the session as well. Bikram yoga is open for anyone from teenagers aging thirteen up to any age at all. However, this form of yoga is not advised for pregnant women, as it can raise the body temperature, which may be detrimental to the health of the mother and the baby. You may struggle at first while executing the positions – and you may end up holding your breath. This can cause your breath to quicken or even panic, which may result to dizziness and nausea. As breathing is an integral part of Bikram, it’s important to keep an even breath all throughout the duration, providing better flow of oxygen to your body so you can fully harness the excellent effects of Bikram Yoga to your body.
