Jivamukti Yoga: Liberation While Living If you are looking for that perfect type of yoga for you, then you may have come across Jivamukti yoga. So, what is this type of yoga and what makes it different from the others? Jivamukti literally means liberation while living. Unlike very old yoga forms, this yoga type is very recent, having made its emergence in 1984. Expert yoga practitioners David Life and Shannon Gannon developed this style of yoga in their yoga studio in New York. Now there are numerous official Jivamukti yoga centers in London, Berlin, Munich, and Sydney, in addition to New York and Charleston, South Carolina. Jivmukti Yoga practice combines a vigorous form of Vinyasa yoga along with emphasis on spirituality as well as aenvironmentalism, social activism and veganism. This form of yoga is quite popular among many celebrities. A Look At One Jivamukti Yoga Class A Jivamukti class is quite physically intense, as it incorporates the Vinyasa form of yoga. Each class incorporates a specific theme, which can either be in the form of spiritual scripture, music, chanting, meditation or asanas. The spiritual teachings and yogic philosophy are taught in such a way that they can be applied on a daily basis. There are different classes of Jivamukti yoga, which is designed to meet different needs and preferences. Here is a look at some specific class experiences for Jivamukti yoga: 1)Beginner Vinyasa – This class is provided for beginners who want to experience how Vinyasa works. The practice starts with a set of asanas, which is somewhat milder and slower than usual. This allows beginners to get a feel of Vinyasa before moving on to open and basic classes. 2)Basic – The basic class involves a four-week fundamental course which explores different yoga aspects during each class. Aside from the asanas, the course involves different teachings such as those mentioned above. 3)Open Class – Open classes are classes that center on a “monthly theme.” This theme is globally set and is practiced in all Jivamukti studios all over the world. The themes are explored through talks, chanting, meditations and reflections, asanas, music and breathing. A large portion of the class is the Vinyasa phase which also incorporates a vigorous sequence of posts. The class then concludes with meditation and deep relaxation techniques. 4)Spiritual Warrior – This class runs for one hour and is designed for individuals with busy schedules. The class follows a set structure, which includes chanting, warm ups and follows a series of asanas. Then it ends with meditation and relaxation. The spiritual warrior focuses more on the Vinyasa practice and on maintaining your pace rather than on spiritual discussions. 5)Private classes – In the olden days, yoga was practiced with one teacher and one student at a time. Even with the presence of many studios and yoga classes, you can experience learning the traditional way through in-class private or ICP sessions. In class private are done during yoga classes, but instead of having one instructor teaching the whole class, the student has a private certified Jivamukti yoga instructor right at his or her side during the class. Should You Try Jivamukti Yoga? Not all places have Jivamukti yoga studios and classes, but if there is one offered near you, then you might want to consider it. However, the question is – is this form of yoga for you? Well, if you want something more than the vigorous yoga exercises typical to hot yoga or Bikram yoga, and want to experience spiritual stimulation as well, then this may be for you.
