Some may think that Nithya yoga is one of those new practices to surface. In reality, this is one of the most ancient and primary systems of yoga. This practice is is concerned in re-emerging the lost truths which have been set and presented in the most original form of yoga, which is Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra.
History of Nithya Yoga
While this practice is based on the Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, it is also based on the experiences of the supreme yogi, Paramahamsa Nithyananda.
Starting from a very young age, Nithyananda was placed under the guardianship of a prominent yogi in Tiruvannamalai, South India. His teacher was known as Yogiraj Yogananda Puri or Raghupathi Yogi. During that time, Nithyananda was primed for enlightenment through techniques taken from Hatha Yoga and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.
Raghupathi Yogi worked with the life energy and the power of sound and visualization. Likeiwse, they focused on the body’s most powerful tool of all – the mind. As stressed by the Ancient Yoga Sutras, the mind is responsible for everything. It is responsible for how we see, perceive and react to many things in the world.
His insights, at times, clashed with what Patanjali has written down in his sutras. However, his great teacher would explain that although they have read what Patanjali has written, they themselves were not present to witness what has gone on inside Patanjali’s head and body language. Thus that made them unable to fully comprehend what has really happened.
What Makes Nithya Yoga Unique
Nithya yoga classes are unique as they incorporate a thirty-five minute practice session, called the Life Bliss Meditation of Nithya Dyaan. This is a dynamic form of meditation. This practice is truly innovative, since it starts in the basest aspects of the self, which is body and breathing. It permits students to move deeper and deeper into the most private, intimate spot in our silence.
Life Bliss meditation starts off with chaotic breathing, followed by intense humming. Then, students are pushed to go deeper with the help of chakra awareness. The next one involves un-clutching, or seeing one’s thoughts as they simply are. The last step is offering of gratitude or Guru Pooja Mantra.
